When doctors in the U.S. treat chronic pain, they turn to opiates, physical therapy, exercise, and rest. Historically, they don’t turn to acupuncture, but this is likely to change. Today, more and more people are turning away from opiates and are looking for safer alternatives, like acupuncture.

Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine

There are many differences between western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Generally speaking, western medicine is more focused on clinical science which includes evidence based testing, pharmaceuticals, and procedures. Traditional Chinese medicine and related services take a whole body approach and uses natural remedies. Western doctors turn to innovations in technology and pharmacology to treat patients, while practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine use herbal remedies other esoteric practices to attempt to improve their quality of life.  However, one should not to condemn nor completely disregard these practices as they have many have not had the chance to be thoroughly researched.  In fact, many patients of chronic pain claim relief of their symptoms from such practices.
Acupuncture has been used by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Experts in traditional Chinese medicine promote holistic healing.  They believe that there are thousands of acupuncture points in the body. These points are connected by pathways called meridians. Illness is caused by disruptions in the flow of energy within your body. Acupuncture uses needles to redirect the flow and promote health.

Western medicine takes a different approach. Doctors in the United States split the human body into different parts and regions. They use various medicines to change the level of hormones and help augment the body’s immune system.  In the west, particularly in the United States, acupuncture is considered complementary or alternative medicine. Doctors favor therapies using drugs, exercise, and physical therapy. They adjust the medications that the patients take and the therapies that they undergo. Doctors are not interested in the flow of energy and are more concerned with the information they can gather from x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and other medical technologies.

Traditional Chinese medicine is much more reliant on herbs and natural remedies. They often prescribe their patients teas, extracts, liquids, and powders made from plants, minerals, and animal products. Like acupuncture, many of the medicines they use are the same ones that have been used for thousands of years.

Tai Chi is another form of therapy used in traditional Chinese medicine. Followers of tai chi believe that they can use their mind to heal their body. They use mental focus, dance like movements, and breathing and relaxation techniques to encourage the mind to fight the disease within the body. This is has not been widely adopted in the west.
